A Quick Guide:
What you’ll need:
- A new lightbulb (make sure it’s the right type and wattage for your fitting)
- A sturdy step stool or ladder (if the bulb is out of reach)
- Optional: Gloves (to protect your hands, especially if the bulb was recently on).

Step 1: Turn Off the Power
Before you start, turn off the light switch to cut the power to the bulb. If you want to be extra safe, switch off at the consumer unit.
Step 2: Let the Bulb Cool
If the light was on recently, wait a few minutes for the bulb to cool down to avoid burning your fingers.
Step 3: Get Access
Use a step stool or ladder to safely reach the bulb. Make sure it’s stable and you’re comfortable.
Step 4: Remove the Old Bulb
For screw fittings (Edison screw):
Turn the bulb anti-clockwise (to the left) until it comes loose.
For bayonet fittings:
Push the bulb in slightly, then twist it anti-clockwise and pull it out.
Step 5: Dispose of the Old Bulb
Put the old bulb in a safe place or in a box if it’s fragile (especially if it’s a halogen or LED bulb). Dispose of it responsibly according to local recycling guidelines.
Step 6: Insert the New Bulb
For screw fittings:
Screw the new bulb clockwise (to the right) until it’s snug but don’t over-tighten.
For bayonet fittings:
Insert the pins into the slots, push in, and twist clockwise until it locks into place.
Step 7: Turn On the Power
Switch the light back on at the switch or consumer unit and test the new bulb.
Tips and Safety Notes:
- Always check the wattage limit on the light fitting and never use a bulb with higher wattage than recommended.
- If the bulb is broken, use gloves and a damp cloth to clean up safely.
- If unsure about working with electricity or if the fitting looks damaged, call a qualified electrician.
